City Conservative Leader Councillor Wendy Thompson said that the Council was still falling far short of its claimed hope to "outperform" the rest of the country in job creation.
"Against a background of unemployment nationally falling by over 400,000 in the year to September, Wolverhampton's claimant count is down, but to 'outperform' other areas, the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance should be falling faster here than it is elsewhere. Instead, we are still at the bottom and the gap between us and the rest of the country is now widening by an alarming amount."
Figures out today show the percentage of people claiming JSA in Wolverhampton was 5.2% in mid-September. Wolverhampton overtook next lowest area Hull last by a clear margin but the gap has now opened to 0.2%.
"We need to ensure that the recent publicity regarding the Council's Business Week is not just hot air," added Councillor Thompson. "There was enough of a danger that it would pass almost unnoticed, but we need regular reports back on how much inward investment it has generated.
Councillor Thompson called on the Council to make its partnership working much more accountable.
"The Council spends public money supporting things like the City Board, which is supposed to include the private sector much more in decision making on creating jobs and promoting the City, but getting hold of any information as to the progress it is making is anything but straightforward. In fact, it is like trying to draw blood from a stone."
